WPT - World Poker Tour
The World Poker Tour (WPT) seems to have been around forever, but in fact it's a fairly new invention. The concept – widely considered one of the driving factors behind the international poker boom – didn't see the light of day until 2002, when TV producer Steven Libscomb, now Managing Director of the company behind the WPT, came up with the idea. The televised WPT became an instant success attracting all the top professional players, a heap of wealthy amateurs and lots of online qualifiers hoping to prove themselves against some of the best players in the world – and of course get a piece of the substantial cash prizes involved. The two TV commentators, Mike Sexton and Vince van Patten, have become a trademark of the WPT. Together they've managed to become the voices of TV poker, and it's hard to imagine how the WPT could have become nearly as successful without Vince and Mike. Contrary to what most believe, Mike Sexton and Vince van Patten are not doing their commentary live. Instead the commentary is edited in at a later stage. The reason is, that the two commentators are not allowed to see the players' cards during the actual game. Like all other tournament circuits the WPT has experienced a massive boom since it's inaugural season. Not only has the WPT increased the number of events from 13 in 2002/2003 to 20 in 2006/2007 – the money has also gotten bigger. Way bigger. In 2007 there was a monstrous $4 million for Juan Carlos Mortensen, the winner of the season final, the WPT Championship – four times the sum Alan Goehring landed back in 2003.
